How to sleep with a snorer

Try this technique to help you sleep with a partner who snores.

There’s a lot of truth in Anthony Burgess’s quote “Laugh and the world laughs with you, Snore and you sleep alone,” don’t you think?

So many couples end up sleep apart or going to bed at different times– just because of snoring.  Snoring is something that is usually easy to fix – if you look beyond the shelves in your local chemist.  But sometimes you need to be able to sleep through other people’s snoring.

I was in hostel accommodation in Spain in 2018 and had taken earplugs etc, so maybe you can imagine how mortified I was to find myself gently asked to turn over.  I was SO embarrassed.   I had no idea… Most people on the meditation retreat had snorers in their rooms.

So, what can you do?  Here’s a technique I have used successfully.

Remember back to other times in your life, when you have successfully learned to sleep through noise.

  • The TV in the other room
  • People coming home late 
  • A hotel room near an airport
  • A flat by the railway
  • Building works starting at an ungodly hour
  • Delivery vans
  • Emergency vehicles
  • That motorbike that accelerates at 2am
  • Dogs barking
  • The birds’ morning chorus at 4am in summer
  • Cicadas chirping

Just for a moment remember the sounds of the cicadas – that beautiful place you visited that time –  that warm night – so relaxing- the cicadas stopping and starting -time and again – Just take yourself back there. 

Perhaps you never thought that the sounds of the cicadas are not complete dissimilar to snoring?

So perhaps you could forgive your partner. They are just reminding you of that wonderful holiday you had.  And just remember and smile, as you relax down into a beautiful sleep to the sound of the cicadas, that you don’t even notice after a night or two. As you relax, breathe gently, and smile, you can allow the cicadas and your partner to be exactly as they are.
